Berbicians Niamatali, Ameerally reaches Men’s 35 Doubles final with upset win
Thirteen year Nicola Ramdyhan upstaged her more experienced junior counterpart
Aruna Ramrattan in a fiercely contested match in the Ladies Singles category in the Pegasus Open Tennis tournament.
Ramdyhan who earlier this year was a finalist in an ITF Under-14 event, battled hard as she was involved in many lengthy and engrossing rallies with Ramrattan in a match exceeding two hours.
Ramdyhan was able to take the first set 6-3 in a back and forth first set.
In the second set Ramrattan raced off to a 3-1 lead as she increased the pace on her groundstrokes to keep Ramdyhan pinned on the baseline. Ramdyhan however fought back to even the match up at 5-5 before Ramrattan won a decisive rally which gave her the momentum to take the set 7-5 and force the deciding super tie-break. Ramdyhan was then able to finally close out the upset win when she edged home by taking the decider 10-6 to advance for a matchup with second seed Shawna Gentle for a place in the Finals.
In Men’s 35 Doubles action, Berbicians Anthony Ameerally/Mario Niamatali upstaged their more favoured opponents, number one seeds Godfrey Lowden/Omar Persaud to book their place in the finals of the Men’s 35 category. The match was evenly contested as the first set was won 7-5 and the second set going to a tie-break as Lowden/Persaud tried to stave off defeat. Exceptional doubles play from the Berbicians allowed them to sneak the win 7-5 in the tiebreak as they negated fellow Berbician Lowden’s usually strong doubles game.
Also advancing to the Men’s 35 Doubles finals were the team of Andre Lopes/Carlos Adams
who easily dismissed Maxie Fox/Sakae Yamada 6-1 6-2. In other doubles action Albert Madramootoo/Steve David Longe handed Fox/Yamada their second loss when they defeated them in three sets to reach the Men’s 45 doubles finals. After losing the first set 6-1, the winners stormed back with a 6-1 win before taking the deciding super tiebreak 10-4.
On Wednesday evening in Mixed Doubles action, Shawna Gentle/Gavin Lewis were able to edge out a win against Thi Fernandes/Sandeep Chand in three sets. Fernandes/Chand dominated the early part of the game taking a 5-1 lead which they barely held on to when they took the first set 7-6. Gentle/Lewis then changed the momentum by camping out on the baseline and were effective with the slower paced game as they won 6-1. The super tiebreak then went 10-8 to the winners as they held their nerves despite losing an early lead.
In Men’s Singles Leyland Leacock booked his place in the Men’s semifinals as he used his experience to get past talented junior Daniel Lopes 6-4 6-2. The Men’s semifinals will see top seed Jeremy Miller taking on Gavin Lewis and Leacock facing Phillip Squires.
