Chairman of the President’s College Parent-Teacher Association (PTA), Abdul Wickham, and the chairman of the Board of Governors, David De Groot are at loggerheads as they spew accusations against each other concerning the financial transactions of the institute.
The chairman of the PTA, last Monday held a press conference at the Guyana Public Service Union (GPSU) where he and other members of the public accused De Grout of being a ‘Crook’ and a big ‘scamp’.
According to Wickham, he was elected chairman of the PTA on September 22, 2010.
“From the inception, I came under severe scrutiny and verbal abuse by the chairman, to the extent that I was subsequently barred from speaking at Board meetings,” Wickham lamented.
Wickham stated that on September 22, 2010, the secretary of the PTA wrote to the chairman of the BOG informing him of his (Wickham’s) appointment, “that very day the secretary of the BOG, Lionel Baldeo, wrote requesting a financial statement from 2008 to 2010.”
“It is to be noted that when I took over chairmanship of the PTA, no records were handed over to me; and as a result I could not have submitted a proper statement of things that I had no knowledge of,” the enraged PTA chairman pointed out.
He added that on December 14, 2011, he was barred from speaking at public meetings because he (Wickham) questioned “certain incorrect information in minutes of board meetings.”
Wickham further emphasized that De Groot have people ‘shift’ from their position if they don’t ‘act’ according to his instructions and followed his orders.
When Kaieteur News contacted De Groot, he stated “Wickham is a desperate man; running from producing a financial statement for 12 months- whatever he said is a pack of lies, a pack of fabrication, there is no truth in whatever he said.”
According to De Groot, the situation between him and Wickham stemmed from a financial statement he (Wickham) was asked to produce. Then there was the fact that he was barred from speaking at meetings, DeGroot said.
De Groot explained, “Wickham was barred from speaking at public meetings because he made scandalous remarks to show I am involved in negative roles.”
DeGroot added that he asked Wickham for an apology but he replied “I have no apology to make.”
“I cannot stop him, but I will not permit him to speak,” De Groot added.
According to De Groot, he is prepared to withdraw the gag if Wickham produced an acceptable financial statement as he was asked to.
