Local chess players will resume the fierce rivalry characteristic of recent tournaments

when the Guyana Chess Federation (GCF) in collaboration with Seven Seas the stages a national championship at Ocean Spray Hotel in Kitty today starting at 11:00hrs.
Competitors will battle over three weekends, in a round robin, two rounds format. The tournament was formally launched yesterday morning at Geddes Grant head office on Mandela Avenue and would be promoted under the Seven Seas label.
President of the Guyana Chess Federation (GCF) Shiv Nandalall disclosed that the top seven players from a recently held qualification tournament will challenge current national champion Taffin Khan for the title. The tournament will run for three weekends and will be played on a round robin basis over two rounds.
Meanwhile, President of the GCF, Shiv Nandalall was especially delighted with the acquisition of much needed corporate assistance. He disclosed that four juniors from among the top seven rated players in this category has been deemed eligible to participate by dint of their outstanding performances in a recently staged tournament between senior players and their junior counterparts.
Mr. Nandalall pointed out that Taffin Khan was a competent junior player before he moved over to the senior category and defeated former senior national champion, Kriskal Persaud. He urged the youngsters to apply themselves diligently to their game since his executives are constantly on the lookout for emerging talent. He said that he is optimistic that many more young players would be influenced by the talent in this championship and participate in future competitions. “I am certain that the senior participants in this championship would not have an easy task in maintaining their relevance when they face off with their younger counterparts over the next few weekends,” Mr. Nandalall opined. He subsequently expressed gratitude to Geddes Grant and Seven Seas for their chivalry while positing that gestures of this nature would only foster rapid growth of the sport.
Speaking on behalf of the sponsors, Product Specialist for Seven Seas, Karen Connell said that chess is a mind game and Seven Seas products provide the right vitamins to support such activities. She encouraged the players to perform at their best and offered her congratulations to those that were selected to compete this year. Five of those players attended the function and received tee shirts along with supplies of Seven Seas vitamins.
