Jevina Sampson ran a blistering pace, clocking a time of 2:34.8 secs to take the honours in the 100m Girls’ U-14 event when activities in the second day of the of the 51st National School’s Athletic Championships continued at the National Stadium Providence yesterday afternoon.
On a day characterized by heated competition and nail biting finishes, District 10 representative, Shannon Griffith powered her way to a convincing victory in the Girl’s 100m, U18 finals in the process upsetting race favorite and Commonwealth Youth Games representative, Tiffany Carto while Leticia Myles sprinted her way to top honours in the Girl’s U20, 100m finals.
The rains were kind to the organisers enough to start the proceedings very early to compensate for a rainy opening day where some of the events were pushed forward. The small but appreciative crowd was treated to several exciting races none more captivating than the Sampson display.
Up to press time only 24 events were completed with District #6 assuming the lead with 105 points. District #5 was in second place with 93 points while District 9 and 12 were on 78 points apiece. However, with one more day of highly anticipated rivalry, the dynamics could undergo drastic changes.
Region 4 representative Chavez Ageday, was also in winners’ row and augmented his first day run in the heats with a scintillating repeat in the finals. He carted off the spoils in the Boy’s 100m, U20 event while Kyron Lynch of District 5 secured victory in Boys’ U18, 100m event. Jevina Sampson of District 11 destroyed her adversaries to capture the spoils in the 100m Girls’ U14 event moments before little Shinara Liverpoole romped home ahead of her adversaries to chalk up an important win for District 10 in the Girls’ U8, 80 meters race.
In added action, Tamar Charles of District 13 carted off the honours in the Girls’ 1000m open walk race with a scintillating display. She led the pack from the onset with a fiery pace right down to the culmination of the race. Nicola Bobb of district 5 finished second. The boy’s open walk race over a similar distance was won by Nathaniel Giddings of District 10. His was a case of fortune as second place finisher, O’Neil Joseph, inadvertently jogged over the line and was subsequently denied the prestigious spot.
Today’s activities promises to be a chockfull of action, despite the disparity of the respective totals, the dynamics could undergo stringent changes as activities are now reaching a climax. The action continues at the same venue starting at 09:00hrs.
