The Berbice Cricket Board (BCB) on Tuesday last received the second installment of its $1M sponsorship for Berbice teams for 2011.
The partnership between the Berbice Cricket Board and the Guyana Telephone & Telegraph Company under its Cellink Brand was initiated last October at the Company’s Brickdam Head Office.
The Company at the launching handed over $500,000 with the commitment to deliver the other portion by October this year.
Chairman of the BCB Special Events Committee Hilbert Foster disclosed that the deal covered the County’s Under-15, 17, 19, 23, Female and Senior Teams.
Tournaments won a result of the sponsorship are the GCB 2010, 50-overs tournament, 2011 Under-15, 2011 Under-17, 2011 Under-19 One Day, 2011 National 50-overs while the County was Runners-up in the 2011 Under-19 Four-Day and Female competitions.
Numerous Berbicians have also represented Guyana at the junior, female and senior levels during this period. Among those players are Arif Chan, Sharaz Ramcharran, Nial Smith, Dominic Rikhi, Loyydel Lewis, Joemal La Fleur, Clinton Pestano, Gudakesh Motie-Kanhai, Kandasammy Surujnarine, Shemaine Campbelle, Tremayne Smartt, Subrina Munroe, Erva Giddings, Phaffiana Millington, Nikita Toney, Assad Fudadin, Royston Crandon, Narsingh Deonarine, Devindra Bishoo, Veerasammy Permaul, Jonathan Foo, Brendon Bess, Keon Joseph, Stephen Latcha, Esuan Crandon, Sewnarine Chattergoon and others.
Devendra Bishoo, Shemaine Campbelle, Tremayne Smartt and Subrina Munroe represented the West Indies at the highest level while Assad Fudadin, Jonathan Foo, Brendon Bess and Veerasammy Permaul played for the West Indies ‘A’ team while Assad Fudadin is currently the Captain of the National Senior team.
Foster stated that the sponsorship has engineered consistent success in the County while informing that the BCB already has advanced plans for the National Senior Twenty20 and Four-Day tournaments which would be played later this year.
The Berbice Under-21 team has also been selected to play teams from Georgetown and East Coast. Foster praised the Management of GT&T for investing in the development and success of Berbice cricket and said the BCB is looking forward to a long and fruitful relationship with the Company.
Board Treasurer Anil Beharry noted that with the first installment last year, over $350, 000 was used to purchase cricket balls for First Division Clubs while the remainder was used to prepare the teams.
The Cellink sponsorship, Beharry informed has assisted the BCB to successfully prepare all Berbice Cellink teams which has resulted in the teams dominating the Inter County tournaments.
