As Election Day draws closer the administration is not happy with the declared intentions of former
Commissioner of Police, Winston Felix, and former Brigadier in the Guyana Defence Force, Edward Collins, as it relates to politics.
Speaking at the Office of the President on Wednesday last, Head of the Presidential Secretariat, Dr. Roger Luncheon said that they view the development as dangerous.
Dr Luncheon was at the time providing media updates on this week’s Cabinet meeting when he shared the concern about the two men.
The two men’s leaning towards A Partnership for National Unity (APNU) in the 2011 Election came to prominence on Nomination Day when they were both seen at the head of that coalition’s entourage.
Felix and to some extent Collins have since been the subject of a barrage of attacks from the People’s Progressive Party/Civic.
Dr Luncheon introduced the segment of his presentation on Felix and Collins as “military politics or political military.”
The Head of the Presidential Secretariat noted that even though Brigadier David Granger has retired for some time now, his decision to lead the Peoples National Congress Reform (PNCR) into elections as its Presidential Candidate, and subsequently APNU, was seen as insensitive.
In light of what he called insensitive for Granger to take on the position, Dr Luncheon said that the presence of Collins and Felix and their new allegiance and open involvement to the APNU and Granger as ‘infinitely disturbing.’
Dr Luncheon told media operatives that both Collins and Felix left office during the tenure of the current administration.
He pointed out that in executing their duties as head of the army or police, both men would have been privy to and had intimate contact with officials, contacts and security sensitive information.
“Their open involvement with political parties so soon after their retirement apart from being unusual is disquieting and can even be considered dangerous,” said Dr Luncheon.
He said too that the fact that both men have joins forces that are in opposition to the government must be of grave concern to those responsible for national security particularly where it concerns access to information and potential disclosure.
Dr Luncheon said that so critical and important is the phenomenon that any sane mind would focus in future on putting in place restrictions on such a practice or even complete prevention all together.
Asked whether Felix who had worked as Head of the Presidential Guard under the Late Former President Desmond Hoyte and transitioned into the current government had disclosed information from the previous administration, Dr Luncheon simply said, “I believe that old adage about serving two masters would come to the fore.”
