With the members of the Disciplined Services set to cast their ballots on Monday, two of Guyana’s major political parties have made a last ditch effort to secure their votes.
Members of the Guyana Police Force, the Fire Service, the Guyana Defence Force and the Guyana Prison Services will cast their ballots one week before the rest of the nation goes to the poll to elect a new government.
Both A Partnership for National Unity and the People’s Progressive Party/Civic have given reasons why members of the Disciplined Services should elect them to office.
In a letter issued yesterday, Presidential Candidate for the PPP/C Donald Ramotar said that the current administration has recognized the increasingly credible performance by the Disciplined Forces in implementing its security policies and strategies.
He noted that while there have been many challenges along the way the Disciplined Forces have continued to enjoy the confidence of the PPPCC government.
This confidence, he said, has been supported and reflected in the consistently increasing budgetary allocations provided to the agencies since 1992.
“Come Monday 21st November, 2011, I urge you to support progress and continuity by voting for the PPPC to remain in government,” Ramotar wrote.
According to the PPP/C Presidential Candidate, his party pledges to continue current strategies and policies and it intends to work with the disciplined services to promote more increases in public confidence.
“Under the PPP/Civic we give a high premium to professionalism and will ensure that days when Ranks saw deductions from their wages to pay for party newspapers and were forced to sell and distribute political materials, never return” he said.
He added that he will ensure that opportunities for life skills and talents are expanded so that when ranks retire, they can integrate in all aspects of society and further contribute their own and the country’s prosperity.
“With the PPP/C remaining in office, together we will fight crime and ensure security for all in Guyana,” Ramotar wrote.
And Vaughn Phillips, leader of the Guyana People’s Partnership, a partner in the APNU alliance, also called on the military for its support to help transform Guyana from a mediocre poor nation to a prosperous and developed country.
“The Guyana Police Force and the Guyana Defence Force are the backbone of our Guyanese society. We implore the members of the disciplined services to make the right decision as you cast your vote.”
He said that a vote for the PPP/C is a vote for mediocrity and backwardness.
According to Phillips, the leadership of the APNU reiterates its support and respect for all workers in Guyana, since all occupations are vital towards the proper functioning of the nation.
“From the drain cleaners who help to protect the nation from floods, to the garbage collectors who help protect us from the disease of overflowing refuge; to the soldiers and police that patrol the nation while we sleep and protect us from bandits and invaders.
“All workers are an asset to the society and the APNU will be a government that builds the common man not just the rich and elite who are already established.”
Phillips said that APNU will reform and professionalize the Disciplined Forces and will confront the National Security issues that face our nation, Instead of “hiding our heads in the sand like the PPP/C government.”
He said that with Brigadier David Granger as President, members of the disciplined services would receive a 20% pay increase immediately upon an APNU government assuming office.
“Members of the Armed Forces, do not leave it solely on the politicians to build your nation; you have to do your part.”
