-remaining vendors to be removed after the holidays
The construction for the Roll on-Roll off facility at the Parika Stelling, East Bank Essequibo is moving apace. There is a beached pontoon supporting cranes hoisting piles and rods that will be used to build the facility. A workers’ hut has also been erected.
The demolition of vendors’ stalls on November 1, 2011, was to allow for the preparation of the construction site by the engineers, according to Minister of Transport Robeson Benn. It would have been hazardous to allow unauthorized persons to continue working in the area, he added.
The speedboats plying the various river destinations have been moved to another location. The Bartica, Supenaam, Wakenaam and Leguan boats have settled closer to the stelling. This change in location has caused some congestion, but business is going on as usual according to Captain and Owner for one vessel plying the Supenaam route Maurice Bovell.
BK International has undertaken to modify the Parika Stelling at a cost $240.1 million. The company also promised to complete the stelling within four months.
The Roll-On/ Roll-Off facility is being built to accommodate the two new Chinese ferries which will be put into operation to supplement the current fleet operating in Essequibo as stated by Minister of Transport, Robeson Benn. According to Benn, the two Roll-On/Roll-Off ferries are expected to arrive from China during the first week in December.
According to a representative of BK International heading the workers on the pontoon, the Project Manager is Agnis Dalrymple who has mobilized the assembling of the modification to the Parika Stelling. He added that they are working towards the facilities completion prior to the arrival of the ferries.
He stated that he was unable to answer any further questions or give specific answers on when and where things were going.
According to Winston Burnett, Monitor for the Bartica boats, the upcoming holiday season has caused an increase in passengers, but they have adjusted well. His only concern was the roughness of the water with the afternoon tide coming in from the Atlantic.
Street vendors have told Kaieteur News that they are expected to remove their stalls from the corner of the road on December 31, 2011 after meeting with the NDC Chairman, the Regional Chairman Julius Faeber and representatives from the Ministry of Public Works.
A distressed stall owner pleaded with someone she assumed to be a contractor or engineer for the Roll On/ Roll Off facility. He had asked them to leave. “Every day we pay sanitation fees. This is our only way to survive and care ourselves much less our families.”
She added that after calling PPP/C Presidential Candidate Donald Ramotar or as she called him, Uncle Ramotar, that he assured her that they did not have to move until the specified time and not to worry.
She warned the government that they will lose votes if they ‘lash down’ the vendors in this country.
