National Schools’ Athletics Championships …Rain shortens Day 1, but seasoned athletes impress
Early morning rains prevented a prompt start but the action in several events compensated somewhat when activities on the first day of the 51st National School’s Athletic Championships got underway at the National Stadium Providence yesterday.
Most of the day’s events consisted of the heats and if the scorching encounters mean anything, athletics fans can steel themselves for the grueling encounters in store today, and tomorrow when the action culminates. 
The girls’ U-20 100m heat was a joy to watch as Letitia Myles blazed her way to the number one spot on the heavy track that had started to blow off in overcast conditions. Most of the 100m heat was completed yesterday with those finals set for today.
Earlier in the day, District 10, Upper Demerara, Jamal Johnston carted off the Boys U-14 1500m race moments before District 5, West Coast Berbice’s, Delicia Harper ran a strategic, and gutsy, race to cart off the honours in the girl’s U14 race over a similar distance.
The Girls’ U-12 1000m proved to be a grueling encounter with District 12, East Georgetown’s, Anita Kendall assuming the lead from the second lap. She never relinquished the advantage and crossed the finish line way ahead of her competitors.
In the Boys U-12 1500m, Elton Nicholson prevailed after surviving a grueling start with the Rupununi’s, Matthew Gordon pushing a hot pace. Nicholson then distinguished himself after taking command in the latter stages of the race.
Emma Paulin, also from the Rupununi, proved too good for her competitors, stomping her authority in the Girl’s U-10 800m race. The action continues today at the same venue. (Michael Benjamin)
