Body max, Eddie Grant sponsor top prizes
The 77th Birthday Inter Ward, Street and Village Knockout football tournament for Mayor Hamilton Green will now start on Tuesday November 22 and Body Max and International Guyanese entertainer Eddie Grant has agreed to sponsor the respective $200,000 and $100,000 first and second prizes.
Coordinator of the by the Mayor’s Cup Committee Lennox Arthur disclosed that they had done some rescheduling and were to start on the 24th but due to circumstances pertaining to the use of the Georgetown Football Club Ground, Bourda they moved up the start by two days to Tuesday.
The remaining playing dates are November 24, December 4 and 8.
A total of 32 teams will compete in the tournament which will see games lasting 30 minutes. The no offside rule would be in effect in this tournament adding to the competitiveness and excitement of the event. A game ending in a stalemate after the 30 minutes will go straight to the sudden death penalty shootout mode.
A first prize of $200,000 is on offer for the winner, while the runner-up will carte off $100,000 along with trophies.
The opening round of action on Tuesday from 6:00pm will see Second Street Alexander Village vs Timehri Panthers, Charlotte Street vs Kuru Kururu Warriors, North East La Penitence vs Kuru Kururu Lions, Broad Street vs Alexander Street, Agricola vs Mojo’s Lions, West Front Road vs Grove and Regga Boys vs Festival City.
The next set of games on Thursday November 24 will see Alexander Village vs Wales, Brave Hearts vs Uitvlugt, Leopold Street vs Goed Fortuin, Mocha vs Stewartville, Sandoval Street vs West Side All Stars, Laing Avenue vs Castello Schemers, Western A vs Den Amstel and War Mongers vs Lima Dam.
The winners battle on December 4 with those eventual winners advancing to the quarters and eventual semis and final on December 8.
Coordinator Lennox Arthur and the Mayor’s Cup Committee are expressing birthday wishes to Mayor Hamilton Green on his special today.
Several sponsors have come forward to ensure the success of the tournament. Among them are Body Max Gym who donated the first prize, Guyanese International star Eddie Grant who put up the second prize, BK International, Chris Fernandes, New Thriving Restaurant, Sterling Products, Winston Rambarran, Nigel’s Super Market, Dr. Colin Watson, Crown Mining, Farfan and Mendes, James Bovell of the Business School and Clem Duncan Snr of Swansea.
