Dear Editor,
The name Patrice Welcome might not be popular among hardball cricket fans, but for those associated with tapeball cricket, Patrice was an icon. After playing handball for Transport Sports Club, PSU, Police and GNS at the first division level in 1991, Patrice was the man calling plays for the Tarmac (Bad Boys), the team that dominated tapeball cricket in Guyana from 1993 to 2005.
And when the first inter-country tapeball tournament was held in 2005 Patrice was the Demerara vice Captain.
At the handball level, Patrice was a highly competitive all rounder, he led PSU at the under 16 and 19 level in 1987 and 1988. He also was a part of Transport Sports Club 1986 under-16 team, which included: Donovan Matthews, Rudolph Narine and Charwayne Walker. Patrice Mitch Welcome died tragically on 2011-11-15, May his soul rest in peace.
