Attorney-at-Law, Nigel Hughes, at the Alliance for Change (AFC) Bath, West Berbice rally on Saturday, said that one of the most dangerous thing that has taken place over the years is the Presidential immunity, to which the Guyana Constitution caters.
He was speaking to thousands who gathered at the political rally. He noted the AFC, within a year of taking office, will remove this portion of the Constitution.
He spoke about a situation two years ago in which Dr Yesu Persaud, Chairman of Demerara Distillers Limited (DDL), spoke about the unfair tax laws that did not allow him to “give his friends tax breaks and duty- free” at the Pegasus Hotel.
Hughes said that President Jagdeo, who was in the audience, “got up and in his normal impertinent self, cuss down that venerable citizen.
“He told Dr Persaud that he was a dunce; that he did not know the tax laws, and that he should go back to school. This is the same Yesu Persaud who went to Cheddi to get Bharrat confirmed as Minister of Finance…and the following day when he went back to office, his experts told him, ‘Mr President, you were wrong.”
“If he had any decency, as a human being with respect, he would have apologized to Dr Persaud. Instead, he behaved like an Emperor; he behaved like a King. He instructed his minions in Parliament, to change the laws, retroactively, to make legal what was illegal, so that his friends could benefit.
“That is what happens when you elect a King and give him immunity from suit”, Hughes said.
The lawyer added that the same “king, two years ago, was running around, cussing out Freddie Kissoon, telling him how he does thief book and how he is a ‘man- kisser’, and Freddie couldn’t sue him, because he is King and an Emperor and is immune from suit”.
“It is this same King that went to Kitty and told the press that they are carrion crows and vultures, and they couldn’t sue him. He was so blind, he didn’t realize that the only reason he would see a carrion crow and vulture is because he was dead meat.
“This man continues to (abuse). He went to Babu John and said Granger got blood on his hands, when he got two generals working in the government from the same time, that must have used Ajax to wash the blood off (their hands), and he did all of these things because we gave him the power of King”.
Hughes said that the second Freddie Kissoon started to research Bharrat, and compare his presidency with that of Burnham, Hoyte, Cheddi and Janet, he found most of the presidencies, except Hoyte, had balanced lists, but he found that Bharrat was an ideological racist”.
“Bharrat suddenly take off the cloak of immunity, run in the court and asked the judge for justice. If he had any sense, and he knew where he had to go for justice, he would have gone to Sharma, but he had already taken him off the air,” Hughes added.
He urged the crowed to never ever give any group or person the power of King to rule Guyana.
Then he talked about Pradoville II. “That is what this King Kong did; he takes a house lot in Pradoville, he builds a house, he sells it to the man advertising for him, for three times the market value and then he already owns a house lot.
“You know what he did as Emperor? He goes and sees a nice piece of land next door to the most expensive real estate, Courida Park, and he instructs the Ministry to take the land away from the little owners and then he gives himself land.
That is the nature of the man. What manner of man or leadership, that a man can abuse the own rules that he put in place?”
“So when Bharrat decides to abuse me, just ask him if he is prepared to live by his own law,” he told the gathering.
He promised the thousands gathered “of a New Day”, “after 14 years in power why every single young person who qualifies does not want to stay here”.
He asked if Bharrat couldn’t “protect his own Minister Satyadeow Sawh, then how can he protect you?” “If you can’t protect me, you can’t rule me, period!”
