A number of persons were accosted while one man was arrested by police and placed in the lock ups overnight at the Reliance police station for heckling at a PPP political meeting at Betsy Ground. The detained person was released a day later without a charge.
The meeting was held on Sunday in front of the residence of AFC executive member Attorney at Law Charrandass Persaud.
It was addressed by Minister of Health, Dr. Leslie Ramsammy and Chief Executive Officer of the Berbice Regional Health Authority, Dr. Vishwanauth Mahadeo.
The meeting was the second held by the ruling party in what was once a PPP stronghold and saw the PPP being heckled for the second time.
As the PPP speakers tried to convince the small gathering about some of their achievements some members of the public who favoured the AFC started to heckle.
When one of the speakers stated, “We make a bridge across the Berbice River,” the crowd shouted, “You lie. Is private company money make the bridge and it too dear fuh cross.”
As one speaker spoke on the New Amsterdam state of the art hospital, one heckler shouted “State of the art hospital and people dying out like nit every day?”
As Dr Leslie Ramsammy started to talk persons started to shout “You use to come here and bad talk Jagan and form URP”.
The police then moved in and after warning the hecklers who continued to taunt the speakers’ one man known as “Churaman” was arrested and placed in the lock ups.
He was subsequently warned and released yesterday afternoon, upon the intervention of Attorney at Law Charrandass Persaud.
Members of the area are peeved at the lopsided treatment meted out to the residents and are calling it unfair. They stated that a few weeks ago the AFC held a meeting in the Number 19 area and two known PPP characters continuously disturbed the meeting. The men tore down and defaced the AFC posters, hung underwear over the posters and threatened the AFC members with pieces of wood, the complainants said.
The men also boasted that it “is we time now and nobody can do we anything”.
One man was arrested and released immediately while the other was never arrested.
