Two months after the Mocha road was renovated by the Ministry of Public Works, residents are appalled at the deterioration in such a short time span.
“We want the same contractors who got truck brucking up the road to fix it back.”
Last September residents protested the deplorable conditions of the road leading to Mocha-Arcadia, East Bank Demerara. Minister of Public Works, Robeson Benn, met housing contractors in the area whom residents claimed were responsible for the damaged roadways.
The protest stemmed from a minibus toppling into a canal that runs alongside the Mocha Public Road and injured several persons in September. Residents had blamed the poor state of the road for the accident.
They reiterated that most persons on their way to work and school found it necessary to walk to the East Bank Demerara public road –a distance of some three miles– since transportation would sometimes refuse to enter the road.
Minister of Public Works, Robeson Benn, had assured residents that the potholes would be patched on the roadway. This was done. However, according to the residents heavy duty trucks fetching sand in the nights have contributed to the massive deterioration of the thoroughfare.
In the area works are being carried out on two new housing schemes which continue to develop as the large vehicles traverse.
Benn had previously explained that he is not responsible for community roads but disclosed that there are projects set up by the Ministry of Housing to target community roads.

They just patch up the road to please the residents because they protested the conditions of the road. as can be seen they did not do a good job.
What do you expect from an incompetent government and ministry.
Mr Ben is the Min,of Public Works and is claiming that he is not responsible for community roads……then why did he interviened….never heard of this before..
Robeson Ben was not employed by they PPP/C govt to build anything much less roads his intervention on they MOCHA -ARCADIA road issue isdue to his job description noting else his task is to break while they other boy build
Trucks should not be blamed for damaging these roads; contractors should start using cement before the asphalt.
“Two months after the Mocha road was renovated by the Ministry of Public Works, residents are appalled at the deterioration in such a short time span.”
This is the typical quality of the infrastructure built by the PPP/C gov’t over its 19 years.
Let Progress Continue…
This is no surprise, Come on, the contractors must get a last small piece before the thieves are voted out and sent to jail, Yo, you contractors are also going to jail, for you were the ones who facilitated the the scheme. Rot in hell.
If the ministry of Public Works does inferior work like this,
Now I understand why contractors does substandard work.
I can’t believe that this sh– is going on in 2011 when there is modern equipment .
The base has to be properly rolled , compacted , and then at least 2 inches of asphalt is the be laid on top. If done properly with stone , it will last for years.
Call FIP he can help::))))))))))))))))) funny
Which civil contractor in Guyana has any prior work experience in road construction any where out of Guyana not one some of them can’t even pave a yard how then can you expect them to do professionally done work when Bar-rat pays one of the BEEES for wharfs that float away IF something like this was done in china were tax- payers money is involved someone surely would have been shot of jailed but in GUYANA THEY MORE YOU STEAL FROM STATE MORE WORK IS GIVEN TO YOU THIS IS PPP/C IN ACTION
