An already hectic Berbice cricket season will get even busier with the launching of another two tournaments on Tuesday last at the Berbice Cricket Board (BCB) Office, New Amsterdam.
The Board in conjunction with Singh Fam Corporation of Port Washington, USA shared plans for the Elizabeth Style Under-19 and Under-21 Inter Club tournaments.
BCB Public Relations Officer and Chairman of the Special Events Committee, Hilbert Foster informed the audience that cricket is being played at all levels in County and with the launching of an Under-21 tournament, the Board has completed two years of developmental tournaments from the Under-13 to 21 levels.
This Foster said, would assist the Board to properly monitor the development of players from a young age until the age of twenty one. The veteran cricket administrator stated that the BCB was delighted to welcome Singh Fam Corporation on board as an official sponsor and expressed gratitude to former Guyana Cricket Board Vice President, Bissoondyal Singh for his role in acquiring the sponsorship which is worth close to half a million dollars. The BCB Foster disclosed would bring off an Under-23 tournament to complete its youth development programme while he said that the Under-19 tournament would be used to select their 2012 Inter County Under-19 team.
Treasurer of the Board, Anil Beharry expressed pleasure at the current level the game in Berbice which is unmatched in Guyana noting that the future looks even brighter. He called on the young cricketers present to take advantage of the opportunities coming their way via the numerous tournaments, programmes/projects of the BCB.
Beharry also gave an update of the Board’s financial status which he described as strong and solid with the balance as at November 1st this year being $1.4M. President of the Board, Keith Foster complimented Elizabeth Style Brand for sponsoring both tournaments which he assured would be of a high standard. Commenting on Berbice’ domination of cricket in Guyana at all levels; Foster said it was the direct result of the hard work of his Board and forward planning.
Mr. Bissoondyal Singh, representing Singh Fam Corporation and Elizabeth Style in a well received speech stated that the Company was pleased to be associated with the Berbice Cricket Board and the development of cricketing talents in the Ancient County.
He gave a comprehensive review on the Cosmetics Company which produces high quality products at very competitive prices. He also expressed confidence in the ability of the Berbice Cricket Board to organise the tournaments, stating the track record of the Board as one of success and progress.
The East Coast Cricket Board President also advised the Under-19 and Under-21 players present at the launching to concentrate on playing cricket and developing their talents and to avoid the politics of cricket administration off the field.
The Berbice Cricket Board/Elizabeth Styles Under-19 tournament would be played on a round-robin basis among 40 clubs for players born on and after the September 1, 1993. Among the talented players who will compete are Shawn Pereira, Gudakesh Motie-Kanhai, Loyydel Lewis, Surujnarine Kandasammy, Kevin Ramdeen, Quacy McPherson, Veerapen Permaul and Nial Smith.
The Under-21 tournament would be played on a knock-out format among the ten First Division clubs in Berbice and six other clubs invited. Players born on or after September 1, 1991, would be involved in this historic tournament and should include players like of Dominic Rikhi, Clinton Pestano, Harrinarine Chattergoon, Mark Lionel, Eugene La Fleur and Keion De Jesus.
