Popular boxing promoter and head of the Holland Entertainment Promotions, Carwyn Holland
Newly appointed Vice President (CBA), Carwyn Holland (left) and President, Jason Fraser sealed the deal with a handshake moments after the conclusion of the press conference
has been named as local representative of the Caribbean Promoters Association (CPA), a recently formed group that proposes to represent the interests of professional boxers from countries within the Caribbean territory.
This much was told to the media at a press conference at Cody’s Place, Restaurant and Bar 345 East Street Georgetown, yesterday afternoon.
The entity was formed approximately three months ago and Trinidadian, Jason Fraser is the President with several other Caribbean nationals comprising the rest of the executive body. Holland has landed the Vice President portfolio with Grenadian, Marilyn Lewis elected as Treasurer. Jamaican Marcus Noble, another Grenadian, Mr. Grant and St Lucian Maurice King are coordinators, while the Secretary is Carl Hutson of St Vincent. The executive body has a life of two years before their Annual General Meeting.
Mr. Fraser said that his organization will assume a leadership role in the resuscitation of boxing across the region that will also serve as an entity overseeing the interest of promoters and boxers.
He further explained that the entity’s birth is timely, when promoters are incurring huge financial losses resulting in the abortion of their promotion ambitions. “With the establishment of the CPA the promoters stand to benefit and would be properly represented while their investments would be protected,” the CPA boss assured.
Mr. Fraser intimated that he intends to initiate a rating system for Caribbean promoters and further collaborate with fellow promoters in North America. He said that his aim is to revitalize the sport comparable to the North American scenario.
Meanwhile, the CPA President said that his organization will convene in Trinidad and Tobago on December 10 to set their agenda for 2012.
When quizzed on approaches to the territorial boards to augment their plans Mr. Fraser revealed that though they have not yet approached these entities on the issue, they plan to do so just after the conclusion of the December 10 meeting.
In the meantime they have incorporated the services of several lawyers and are examining the legal ramifications. Afterwards, the CPA executive will initiate discussions with the heads of the respective Caribbean boxing boards on the way forward. Finances to offset the programmes of the CPA were touted to be derived from a stipulated percentage from the promoters.
Holland expressed gratitude for his installment even as he acknowledged the business savvy of Mr. Fraser. He said that entities like the CPA are common across the world and are basically implemented to offer competent representation to boxers ensuring that they treated fairly.
