– Forde competes in Panama stage tomorrow
The Athletics Association of Guyana (AAG) yesterday announced that the second stage of the ninth edition of the International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF) South American 10km Road Race Classic will be held in Guyana next Sunday.
The AAG officially launched the event at the Guyana Olympic Association Headquarters with President, Colin Boyce informing that Cleveland Forde has left Guyana to compete in the first stage of the race that will be held in Panama tomorrow.
From left AAG Vice-President, Cornell Rose, General Secretary, Claude Blackmore, President, Colin Boyce and Pamela Phillips usher in the ninth IAAF South American 10km Road Race Classic yesterday.
He said that the Guyana Defence Force funded Forde to compete in Panama amidst negotiation to have Panama represented in Guyana. Boyce had indicated at the press briefing that if Panama continues to boycott the Guyana stage, Guyana will not compete in Panama.
The South American 10km Road Race Classic is held in Suriname, Guyana and Panama, which are the three South American countries without synthetic tracks. The Surinamese and Guyanese are usually represented in all three stages except the Panamanians.
General Secretary of the AAG, Claude Blackmore stated that invitations to compete in the race were sent to the North American, Central American and Caribbean (NACAC) associations and the South American Federations with no written commitment of participation to-date.
However, Blackmore informed that Brazil, Trinidad and Tobago, Suriname and Grenada are the countries that have so far given oral commitments of their participation. Blackmore said that he knows the trend of the late rush for registration will continue this year.
Locally, it was disclosed that only two veteran athletes have so far registered for the race that is usually well received. Registration closed yesterday, but the AAG officials present at the media briefing indicated that they have to consider extending that deadline.
