…eight months after promise
Several months have passed and residents of the Meten-Meer-Zorg sideline dam (West Coast Demerara) have been left without a sturdy bridge which would allow them to easily enter and exit their area through the adjacent De Kinderen village.
Kaieteur News understands that this bridge would be utilized mainly by school children whose school(s) are located in De Kinderen and persons who would be able to secure transportation to travel to their destinations via that route.
According to the Meten-Meer-Zorg sideline dam residents, the bridge began to deteriorate in early February this year and both the Neighbourhood Democratic Council (NDC) and the Regional Democratic Council (RDC) were notified that speedy repairs were necessary.
A female resident makes her way across the “makeshift bridge” which residents of Meten-Meer-Zorg have to use in order to have convenient access to De Kinderen
Reports are that it wasn’t until late March month after heavy flooding that the Regional Chairman, Julius Faerber, and members of the NDC paid the area a visit.
They then witnessed the bridge’s further deterioration and subsequently dismantled the remaining structure with promises to rebuild a new bridge within a short period of time.
Eight months after that promise has not yet been fulfilled.
Residents complained to this newspaper that though there is another bridge in the area which can be used, it is too time-consuming for them to utilize since they would have to walk a great distance to arrive at their desired location(s).
“If we use dah other bridge is nuff time it does tek and we does have to walk all de way from the back here to the front side of the village. Then we gat fuh cross and walk all de way round De Kinderen to get back to the opposite side of de damage bridge,” said one woman.
Kaieteur News was told that most of the people who would use this bridge range from diabetic and pressure cases to very old and feeble ladies.
Another resident explained that because having a bridge at that location was very important to the villagers and school children they had no choice but to build a “make shift bridge” until the NDC or RDC stepped in.
“We had to come together and lay wood on the post them and make we own bridge. How long more we can go on like this? The other bridge wha dem think all of we can use, it badly damage and after we beg and deh pun dem bone all de time, after a long time dey repair it. We mussy got to do the same again. But why? We does pay tax,” stated a male resident.
