A gentle old lady said to me in Nigel’s Supermarket last month if I don’t think that Peeping Tom is the President himself. I told her no. Without being personal, (and I sincerely say here that I am not), I don’t think Mr. Jagdeo can write intellectually smart essays as a columnist.
She looked perplexed and continued that Peeping Tom must be some “high Minister.” Whatever he or she is, the Peeping Tom columns have become propaganda essays for the PPP’s campaign.
It is going on non-stop. The latest absurdity is in last Saturday’s issue where the faceless, nameless writer (should we still have that kind of thing in the print media after the rise of the electronic media?) suggested that APNU broke up the PPP’s meeting in Buxton because defeat is staring APNU in the face. Well at least APNU has a face. This columnist here has both a name and a face and this columnist is saying boldly and unambiguously that defeat is staring the PPP all over its body, not only the face.
Before I go on, I concede that columnists like Peeping Tom and Ralph Seeram have the right to choose a victor in the elections. We are all opinion-makers. We offer our opinion – you can take it or leave it. Ralph Seeram, who doesn’t live in Guyana (and I don’t know if all the Peeping Toms live here) has dismissed the political worth of Moses Nagamootoo in the campaign in his last Sunday column. For me, Nagamootoo may cause the AFC to win the election.
All over the world, columnists offer their assessments on likely loss and likely victory. Peeping Tom, Frederick Kissoon and Ralph Seeram do it so I have no quarrel with the nameless and faceless Peeping Toms (maybe there is only one now). I disagree with the Toms and Mr. Seeram.
I will dismiss Seeram quickly because you cannot live outside, be unaware of the crowds Nagamotoo is pulling, and conclude he is not of political value in the campaign. But as readers know, Seeram is the latest convert to the PPP’s cause.
What is sickening about the PPP’s role in this campaign is its pathological barefacedness. Some of the PPP’s leaders have decided to report the private media to the UN for incitement. This comes at the same time when the state-owned media is brutalizing the eyes and ears of this population with the worst form of ethnic pandering.
The sad thing about Cheddi and Janet Jagan is that they instilled their semi-educated protégés in the early seventies when they brought them down to Freedom House with the ideology of the historical greatness of the PPP.
So great is this party named the PPP that the “fools and stupid people” at the UN will listen to them. The Freedom House charlatans are unable to comprehend the existence of the world-wide web. So Clement Rohee is still confused as to how a Canadian immigration judge can accept a criminal accusation against him and grant Rohee’s victim asylum in Canada.
So let’s get back to Peeping Tom and the fright APNU has about the PPP’s victory. As far as I know, and from what the media reported, there was no break-up of the PPP meeting. This paper had a front page zoom of PPP supporters dancing while PPP leaders were speaking. Now this so-called interruption will be lodged as a complaint by the PPP to GECOM.
So who is to complain to GECOM over what I saw at Dundee in Mahaicony a few Saturdays ago?
The resources of the State were openly employed at a PPP meeting. Buxtonians cannot chant at a PPP rally but the PPP can use the resources of the State for its own narrow party purposes. Buxtonians cannot chant at a PPP rally but it is alright for NCN and the Chronicle, the properties of the people of this country, to be made playthings in the hands of the PPP. Buxtonians cannot chant at a PPP campaign meeting but the Convention Centre could be used as a campaign house for the PPP.
If my memory serves me right, the last time I checked, the Convention Centre was not purchased by Freedom House.
We end this column with a direct reply to the Peeping Toms or Mr. Peeping Tom and the gentleman who lives in Florida and ain’t coming back, the one by the name of Seeram, the PPP is doing so badly that we may be seeing the very last of these so-called “historic” people.
