Through public-private partnership the area commonly known as ‘Donkey City’, within the vicinity of the Georgetown Ferry Stelling, has been transformed into a gated shopping complex with 66 concreted stalls.
The $40M New Stelling View Mall was officially opened on Saturday replacing a ‘run-down’ facility which housed shabby stalls and served as a haven for criminals at nights.
This is according to the Clerk of Markets, Schulder Griffith, who noted that the new facility was established to accommodate those vendors who were selling outside Stabroek Market.
The intentions were to prevent unfair competition to stall holders paying monthly fees to the Mayor and City Council, increase the Council’s revenue, and improve the physical infrastructure and aesthetics of all vending facilities under the Municipal control.
Griffith emphasised that years ago the facility was used as a shopping complex but owing to street vendors posing unfair competition to the stall holders, the municipality was forced to move to the front to sustain their business.
He urged that the Council and stall holders must guard against such relapses. “You must be prepared to stay for the long haul, because only then consumers will find you. The key ingredient in the success of any business lies in its customer relationship,” Griffith stated.
He added that stall holders must devise strategies to attract customers and provide high quality services and goods to have them return.
According to Mayor Hamilton Green, a market place is essential in every society for it enables the trade of goods and provides an environment for discussions on current events.
Despite the many challenges the Council face it is making strides in improving the City and this project is testimony.
He expressed optimism that within the next few months the City will grow with the election of a new Mayor and City Council. Green anticipates that that the City will then be restored to what it can be.
Public Works Minister Robeson Benn, urged the Council to ensure that order is restored among the vendors. He said that vendors and consumers need to conduct business in clean environment. Unless vendors have an enabling environment they will be unable to optimize from their activities.
Minister Benn said that besides helping to pave the facility, the Ministry spent over $700M executing road works around the City.
