Having had to survive overt attempts to hinder the smooth running of its Competition which is being conducted in collaboration with beverage giants Banks DIH under its President Beer brand, play in the Georgetown Football Association-organised Super League resumes today with a triple header, at the GFC ground.
In the opening encounter, University of Guyana will do battle with Black Pearl from 16:00 hrs and that will be followed by the clash between Beacons and Riddim Squad from 18:00 hrs, while the feature game will see local football champions Alpha ‘the Hammer’ United lock horns with the youthful Fruta Conquerors side at 20:00 hrs.
In the opening encounter, not much is known of the UG side, but word is that they’ve been preparing under the watchful eyes of former standout central defender Earl ‘the Pig’ O’Neal and his experience, having played at the international level should see them put up a formidable challenge against Black Pearl.
On the other hand, Black Pearl has been the more consistent side in terms of play and should start as favourites to gain full points.
Among those anticipated to appear for Black Pearl are Kewrwin Jackson, Tyhuis McAlmont, Dwayne Chase, Stephen Prass, Jason Clarke and Lomel Johnson.
In the Beacons versus Riddim Squad affair, the latter had an impressive season when football was last played in Georgetown and every opponent knows their quality with the Hope siblings Sceyon and Sheldon expected to lead their quest for full points, while support should come from the likes of Lyttleton Ramsay, his brother Amos, Dorville Stewart and Mark Gilkes, while Beacons charge for victory will be spearheaded by Phillip Rowley, Dillion Fraser, Paul Giles, Sherwin Grimes, Jerome Richardson and Eon Singh.
It looks to be an interesting matchup that should provide top class action from end to end.
In the feature clash, Alpha United once their stars take to the field should prove too strong to the upcoming future stars of Guyana’s football.
Alpha’s Anthony ‘Awo’ Abrams, Shevane Seaforth, Shawn Bishop, Quincy Madramootoo, Kelvin McKenzie and Ronson Williams between the uprights on paper appear to be too much of a challenge for the likes of the star-studded junior line-up of Conquerors.
However, having said that, the Conquerors unit looked sharp in a friendly encounter against Riddim Squad recently and Alpha United should be guided by that determined performance against such a seasoned side.
Once again the silky skills of Pernell Schultz, Jermain Junor, Travis Hackett, Eon Alleyne, Marco Marcus and the cool and calm Trevon Lythcott will be aiming to lead the team to victory, while the impressive Colin Edwards, another emerging star will be looking to thwart the threats of Abrams and company.
