Dear Editor,
I am a young Guyanese and to my mind this is a very important election year for Guyana. I believe it is the year for Guyana to change the course which the current government has placed Guyana on. It should be criminal for the things this government has allowed under their watch. We must not allow Jadgeo and the PPP/C Government to become the Muammar Gaddafi of our country. I am deeply troubled most of all by the following issues
1. The former Presidents’ Bill. Based on the estimate stated by the OP Mr. Jagdeo will receive 1 million dollars tax free. That’s a total of 12 million dollars tax free in cash only. If they are returned to government over the next five years this one man will received a whopping 60 million dollars tax free. This does not include the added perks of cost free living since the state will be responsible for all other expenses such as utilities, vacation allowance and salaries of his personal staff. So what will he do with these massive earnings?
2. Also on the former President’s Bill since Mr. Hinds is our only living former President, is he currently receiving those benefits? If he is not in receipt of the benefits OP should provide an explanation and should indicate when the benefits will commence for Mr. Hinds. Further to put that into prospective he will also earn a tax free 60 million dollars in the next five years if this government is returned to power. Should Guyana be asked to pay just two individuals 120 million dollars over a five year period as pension when the average pension for most Guyanese is an average of 6600 dollars?
3. I believe that whoever the people decide to put into government, it must be demanded that the Former President’s Bill be amended. A pension of 200,000 to 400,000 (at maximum with the stretch of any imagination) should be approved for former presidents. Benefits such as duty free, ancillary staff salaries and vacation allowance should be capped and benefits should commence at the pension age.
