After losing items worth more than $100,000 to a fire said to be of electric origin early yesterday afternoon, Raymond Roopnauth is still in shock. The 17-year-old lad said that he could not understand how the fire could have occurred since all items in the home are usually turned off and plugged out.
The young man, who works only corners away from his Lot 92 La Penitence Street, Albouystown two- storey home, said that he received a call from a neighbour telling him that his home was on fire.
The employee of E and N Beck Mechanic Shop said that he sped home to discover that the fire was almost out and half his room destroyed.
Roopnauth said that he lives with his father and small sister who were not home at the time of the incident.
According to the lad, he met his uncle who lives on the upper flat of the house, battling the blaze after he had broken in to get to the fire. The youngster said that when he arrived home he assisted his uncle with buckets to put out the blaze.
He said that the fire was confined to the front room of the house which he occupied.
The young man said that fire officials who were on the scene just minutes after the fire had been put out attributed the flames to an electric fault.
The man said that the fire started in his room where they believe a fan may have been the cause of the inferno after overheating.
He said his bed has been completely destroyed as well as his laptop, fan and an iron among other things.
Despite his loss, the young man said that he is happy that the blaze was contained and that no one was hurt.
