-cops seek youth who was attacking victim
The man who was run over on Thursday night by a John Fernandes Limited truck has succumbed from his injuries and police are probing reports that he was fleeing from a gang of youths when he met his death.
The man, who is still unidentified, succumbed yesterday at the Georgetown Public Hospital from head and other injuries. He was struck by the truck at around 19:00 hrs on Thursday in the vicinity of Agri Parts Manufacturers on Mandela Avenue.
Police have received reports that the victim, who appears to be a vagrant of East Indian ancestry, was attacked by a group of youths who had accused him of stealing a bicycle from a nearby yard.
It is alleged that one of the youths picked up a stick and was attempting to beat the vagrant. The man reportedly then ran from the yard into Mandela Avenue, where he was run over by the JFL truck’s rear wheels.
The victim was taken to the GPHC in an unconscious condition where he subsequently died.
A young man who is suspected to have been with the man’s attacker was questioned at the Ruimveldt Police Station before being released.
Kaieteur News understands that he is employed at a Mandela Avenue establishment.
The driver, who has been detained, also claimed that the accident victim, ran into the path of his vehicle after being chased.
