-Savona scores hat trick for Lady Jags; Soriano records 6 for DR, epic battle looms
Guyana (5-0) and Dominican Republic (9-1) routed their opponents at the Powerade sponsored CONCACAF Women’s under-20 Qualifying Championships which was held at Uitvlugt Community Centre ground yesterday afternoon.
The Lady Jaguars were able to control their game and register five goals despite Anguilla’s strong defence in the double header, which also saw Dominic
an Republic crushing Antigua and Barbuda 9-1 in the first match.
Ashlee Savona was able to record a hat-trick for the Lady Jags as Kailey Leila had a double to assist in Guyana defeating Anguilla in the qualifiers.
Savona first goal was made in the six yard box of the field with a clean pass from her teammate, on the 4th minute of the first half.
After Savona’s first goal, the Anguillans tighten their defence against the Lady Jags who seemed to be calm and focused. The defence was eventually broken with Leila’s goal which came on the 36th minute.
The second goal for Guyana came with a headed pass from one of the members of the team which was then volleyed into the net by Leila’s strong right foot.
Anguilla’s defence though strong, did not halt the mighty Lady Jags who returned to score three more goals to conclude the game.
Savona’s second goal for her team was in the 73th minute. “The goal was assisted by my teammate Tyessa Edwards who tapped the ball…there was a break away and I then approached, I kicked the ball towards the goalie (Esther Ward) and it bypassed her,” she told Kaieteur Sport during an invited comment.
Two minutes later, the fourth goal was registered. This was where Leila’s double was recorded with a rebound off her partner in the 6 yards box on the 75th minute of the second half.
Savona made the final goal for Guyana on the 88th minute with a pass which was assisted by Otesha Charles who had four goals in the previous match against Antigua and Barbuda on Wednesday.
Leila informed Kaieteur Sport about their game against Anguilla, “…it was a good match but hard, however we kept the pressure on Anguilla, we worked hard as a team and the weather condition caused the game to be tougher but I think this game was better than our first one.”
Meanwhile, Dominican Republic blasted Antigua and Barbuda 9-1 in the first match which was slated at 1PM.
A six goal effort came from Yauaelsi Soriano who had a hat-trick in her previous match. Soriano’s goals were made on the 15th, 17th, 48th, 56th, 60th and 90+1 minutes of the game. The other three were from Anajaira Burgos and Loida Jesus. Burgos’ had her goals registered on the 35th and 80th minutes, while Jesus’ was on the 87th minute.
Kai Jacobs’ goal on the 64th minute was the only goal for Antigua and Barbuda in the CONCACAF Women’s under-20 Qualifying Championships.
The final matches will be played tomorrow with Antigua and Barbuda battling Anguilla from 1PM and concludes with Guyana facing the Dominican Republic, closing the curtains of the tournament with the final match for this group from 3PM.
Admission is $300.
