-City Hall report
Georgetown Mayor Hamilton Green says that the Town Clerk and City Engineer have both apologized for an incident in which trucks contracted by City Hall have been dumping refuse in Le Repentir Cemetery.
But the mayor says that he is far from satisfied with the report that he received yesterday on the incident.
According to Green, the Town Clerk and the City Engineer claimed in their reports that they had arranged with private contractors to fill a hole in the cemetery with builder’s waste.
However, the report claimed that instead, the truck drivers took garbage to the wrong route and dumped the refuse there.
“I got the report this afternoon and I will investigate it,” Geeen said.
On Wednesday, Kaieteur News had observed a number of trucks dumping refuse in the cemetery on the western side near St Stephen’s Street.
The drives claimed that the Mayor and City Council instructed them to do so.
The Le Repentir Dumpsite was officially closed earlier this year, after it had reached catastrophic proportions, almost overrunning the Le Repentir Cemetery.
A new landfill site was opened at Haags Bosch, East Bank Demerara under the management of a private company.
Contrary to the report Mayor Green has received, tomb builders in the cemetery told this newspaper that the dumping commenced about a month ago.
They claimed that several graves and tombs had been bulldozed to facilitate the new development.
According to the tomb builders, they have been encountering difficulty finding space for burials.
They also claimed that the dumping is so uncontrolled that it is also posing a problem for them to get to their work areas.
Residents of the nearby community observed that while efforts are being made to restore the Le Repentir cemetery, the recent development is undermining the programme.
