Fifty families residing in the Amerindian community of Tapakuma, on the Essequibo Coast, are the beneficiaries of another 50 homes donated by Food For the Poor. The village adopted the name “Theresa” after the donor, Darren Dyer, a Christian American.
Tapakuma is the seventh village to be built in Region Two by members of FFTP international, in conjunction with Food For The Poor Guyana.
The commissioning by FFTP was done on Thursday.
Commenting on how the project got started, FFTP Executive Director, Leon Davis, said that prior to FFTP getting involved in the buildings of homes for the needy, the international body of FFTP had done numerous works in the Region.
Davis said it was amazing that the foreign donors, some of whom never visited Guyana, were willing to contribute to citizens of this country.
Mr.Davis said that already they continue to receive donations from persons abroad who are planning to build homes in another Amerindian Community, Mashabo.
Davis promised to keep working with members of the community and urged the recipients to take care of their new homes and village as a whole. “We will not leave the village alone and undone, but rather work right through.”
Chairman of Food For The Poor Guyana, Paul Chan a-Sue, told attendees that when he started out with the NGO, he observed what he referred to as real poverty in Guyana.
Mr Chan-a-Sue, who referred to the birth of the new village as a ‘jewel’ noted also that although the organization cannot comprehensively alleviate all of the problems of the persons who are in need, some works are being done to alleviate those problems.
“We can’t do it all, but we will try the best we can.”
Chan-a-Sue further urged the recipients to further appreciate what they have. A call was also made by Chan-a-Sue for persons to keep their surroundings clean even as they maintain their new homes.
Toshoa, Doreen Jacobis, said that the commissioning of Tapakuma, will go down in history, noting in March of this year she received two phones from senior member of FFTP, Guyana requesting for homes to be constructed in that community.
Jacobis stressed that in June, FFTP members visited the Community and preparatory works unfolded.
She said within 38 days Tapakuma was transformed into what it is now.
Donor, Darren Dyer, a devout Christian, first showered thanks on God for his many blessings and said he is with FFTP for more than seven years. Dyer also thanked those worked towards the realisation of the Village.
The 50 homes were constructed by contractor Punraj Singh, within 38 days. Members of the Community assisted in clearing the logs and planting fruit trees in their yards.
FFTP villages are also located at Siriki, Onderneeming, Capoey, Mainstay, and Redlock Village.
Everton was among one of the first recipients to move into his new home.
Among the attendees were executive director of FFTP, .Leon Davis, Project Manager FFTP, Susan James, Chairman of FFTP, Paul Chan-Sue, Toshoa Doreen Jacobis, Region Two Chairman Ali Baksh and donor, Darren Dyer. (Yannason Duncan)
