A 24-year-old man and his 23-year-old girlfriend perished shortly after 20:00 hrs last night after their motorcycle slammed into a utility pole near Houston, on the East Bank of Demerara.
The couple has been identified as Lloyd Mc Kend, of Lot 203 Second Street, Number Two Scheme Uitvlugt, West Coast Demerara; and Roshena (Lashana) Smith, also of Uitvlugt.
Mc Kend was employed at Bounty Meat Centre while Henry worked at Survival Supermarket.
The couple has a two-year-old son and were heading home when the tragedy occurred.
According to reports, Mc Kend had just negotiated a turn near Houston when he lost control and slammed headlong into a utility pole.
A woman who drives a pickup assisted in taking the motionless couple to the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation where they were pronounced dead on arrival.
Lloyd’s stepmother, Grace Mc Kend, told Kaieteur News that she was at home when another son called to say that Lloyd was involved in an accident and had been taken to the hospital, and he “wasn’t looking too nice.”
At the time, she was unaware that Lloyd’s girlfriend had also been injured.
“I left and called Lloyd’s sister and (another) brother and told them what had happened, and that we were going to the hospital,” Mrs. Mc Kend said.
“On my way, I got another call from Lloyd’s brother who told me that Lloyd had passed away.”
Mrs. Mc Kend said that she was told that one of her sons, Randel, was riding on another motorcycle ahead of the couple. He stopped to buy gas at the Mc Doom gas station and realized that Lloyd was not with him.
“He turned back, just in time to see them putting Lloyd in a pickup.”
Mrs. Mc Kend said that Lloyd’s father, who is overseas at present, has been notified of the tragedy.
