I begin this essay by commenting on the incredibly barefaced Rickey Singh who in his Chronicle columns extolled the results of a polling organization named NACTA. For over five years now it has been proven that there is no organization on the globe by the named NACTA that does polling around the world.
But Singh tells his Chronicle readers that NACTA has it right and the PPP will win again. Singh must be frustrated that the Chronicle’s circulation in Guyana is less than two thousands. What does it mean? That the Guyanese people do not read Singh’s propaganda.
Of course, Singh wants the PPP to win because an opposition victory would find Singh an unwelcome guest in Guyana. But let’s move from the absurd to the theoretical. Two developments are making the rounds everywhere in Guyana. One was born since the election campaign began, the other raised its head three days ago.
Let’s deal with the last one first. Mrs Gowmattie Singh claimed that she is receiving death threats. There is no way the media can prove otherwise. But of course it is up to every citizen to decide if he/she believes Singh.
What do I believe? Did she receive death threats? Before I answer that, we need to examine logical deduction. First, if the calls were made, suspicion would focus on the AFC and not APNU because Singh had a raging battle with the AFC after the 2006 elections. But logically speaking why would the AFC that is riding high on the presence of some really top names want to scare Ms. Singh?
Surely, the AFC knows that it will be counter-productive to do so. The party can’t be that silly. Why hasn’t the AFC threatened Dr. Rishi Thakur, who is a Berbice-based academic that has left them for APNU?
Why hasn’t APNU tried to scare away Dr. Emanuel Cummings who was on their list the last time? The same goes for Joe Hamilton. Why hasn’t APNU tried intimidation with Dr. Van West Charles? Why no warning to Nagamoootoo and Bissessar from the PPP that they have left?
It seems strange that only Gowmattie Singh has been targeted. Logical deduction would rule out to my mind any role for the AFC.
I would posit two competing scenarios. One is that it could be a stratagem to raise Ms. Singh’s profile. She has been totally missing in action for over a number of years now. That was understandable; she suffered an acid attack for which the perpetrator should be jailed without ever seeing daylight again. But never mind how much we empathize with Mrs. Singh, I don’t think her presence can dent the AFC or cause a huge swing to the PPP. I may be wrong but that is the way I see it.
The second possibility is that Mrs. Singh did receive those nasty transmissions but it could be part of a stratagem to dirty the AFC. In this political game we are witnessing in the campaign (that is, the non-stop crossing over) all the PPP, the AFC and APNU have to do is to threaten a cross-over candidate and the former party will be seen as the culprit. If the AFC sets up people to frighten Moses Nagamootoo, eyes will be on the PPP. Likewise if some hooligans made that call on behalf of the PPP, the AFC will get the blame. In the end, it is childishness and it won’t sway voters. My opinion is that the AFC did not make those calls.
By the way, I get threats all the time. And I don’t lose any sleep.
The second deduction leads you to conclude that the PPP is overflowing with money in this campaign. Uncle Adam are you listening to me? Can the PPP throw me a couple dozen millions for me to cross the floor? How about fifty?
But on a serious note, those countless billboards and mini-billboards that are all over Guyana have to run into dozens and dozens of millions of dollars. These things are not twenty miles apart; they are literally yards away from each other.
As you turn into D’Aguiar’s Turn, you see one. Then as you straighten up on Public Road, Kitty, just yards away, there is another. As you enter Vlissengen Road, yet another huge billboard stares at you. And the pattern continues throughout Guyana. I repeat – throughout Guyana.
Not to mention the large contingent of paid cadres the PPP has. Can these countless millions generate a victory for the PPP? I doubt it. I really doubt it.
