A Rural Constable attached to the La Bonne Intention Community Policing Group on the East Coast of Demerara has been arrested for shooting a 32-year-old city carpenter who was walking through the community, last Tuesday afternoon.
David Austin, of Johanna Cecilia, Essequibo Coast, and also of D’urban Street, Georgetown sustained a wound to his left thigh from the blast of a shotgun while he was walking on the LBI Railway Embankment around 16:00 hours.
He has been admitted to the Georgetown Public Hospital.
Reports reaching this newspaper stated that Austin was walking through the village when he was spotted by the Rural Constable.
The obviously over zealous constable subsequently informed the rural sergeant and they both went to confront the ‘stranger’. They were both clad in civilian clothes.
According to reports, the RC, who was armed with the CPG shotgun called out to Austin to stop but the man kept walking since he claimed that he was unaware that the men were talking to him.
The RC told investigators that he discharged a round into the air but Austin still did not stop.
Another shot was fired this time aimed directly at Austin hitting him in the left thigh.
The injured man was subsequently picked up and taken to the hospital, while the rural constable was taken into custody, where he remained up to last night.
