Sunday, despite overcast weather conditions with persistent drizzle, the GTC/PM Volleyball team played brilliantly to remain undefeated in a round robin competition organized by the Berbice Volleyball Association for the Dilip Budhram Memorial Trophy.
Due to heavy morning rains the competition did not commence until 11:45hrs. The participating teams adapted well to the conditions. However, GTC/PM dominated all of their opponents through good settings by Jason Seelochan (fresh from IGG in Suriname) and the powerful spiking of Quacy Matheson.
GTC/PM defeated Albion VC, Sunshine Girls (the lone female team in the competition), Port Mourant Jaguars “A” and Port Mourant Jaguars “B” At the end of the competition based on matches won and total numbers of points scored – Albion VC emerged second and Port Mourant “A” third.
Before the start of the competition a minute silence was observed for the late Dilip Budhram who was a volleyball enthusiast and sponsor of BVA competitions during the late 90’s and early 2000’s. He passed away in October 2010.
At the presentation ceremony held after the conclusion of the competition, President of the BVA Gregory Rambarran thanked the family of the late Dilip Budhram for sponsoring the competition and congratulated the participating teams for braving the weather and playing good volleyball. He said he was impressed with the play of the youthful Albion team and encouraged them to inculcate a good attitude and work on improving their basics.
He also praised the Sunshine Girls for competing against the males and assisting in the general conduct of the games pointing out that history was created in Berbice Volleyball when two females (Tamala Felix and Cynthia Harris) participated in IGG recently in Suriname, served as referees in one of the matches.
BVA Vice President also addressed the teams and urged the U-19 players to start their preparation for next year’s IGG. He also praised and thanked the daughters of the late Dilip Budhram for sponsoring the competitions and acknowledged the work he did for volleyball in Berbice when he was alive.
GTC/PM received the first place trophy, Albion the second and Port Mourant Jaguars “A” received the third place trophy. The members of the first and second placed teams each received medals.
Trophies for outstanding individual performances went to:
Most Valuable Player (MVP) – Quacy Matheson of GTC/PM
Best Server – Temesh Jagmohan of Albion V.C
Best Blocker – Asif Singh of Albion
Best Libero – Richard Samaroo of GTC/PM
Best Defence – Ravindra Rambharran of Albion
Best Spiker – Quacy Matheson
The trophies and medals were handed over by the daughters and grandchildren of the late Dilip Budhram.
Teams and clubs were also reminded about submitting the results of matches played in the BVA’s Reggie Goberdhan Memorial Trophy League competition which is ongoing.
The BVA will be holding its annual general meeting on November 27 at the Trinity Street primary School (All Saints Anglican Church hall) at 09:00 hrs.
