Despite the inclement weather which brought heavy rains in the West Berbice area and some
flooding to the Rising Sun Rodeo arena the Rising Sun Rodeo was still successfully held. With skills, thrills and spills that highlighted the day’s proceedings at the Rising Sun Turf Club, Arima Park West Coast Berbice last Sunday.
In the end Brazilian Max Celso Farias was adjudged the Rodeo King with three victories. Farias victories came in the Bare Back Bronco event, Saddle Branco and the Wild Bull riding as he dominated all the riding events.
This year the competition was very intense as more cowboys came out to strut their stuff especially with the wet conditions, action on some occasions was breathtaking. The mud and the rainy weather made things more risky, making the day’s activity more thrilling as the wet outfield and the muddy condition made the encounters even more exciting.
The event had its fair share of spills and thrills as the Vaqueros displayed their skills in some daring and breathtaking sequences as many spectators were left bewildered and in awe.
Many vaqueros were not as successful as they were thrown off the respective animals in their quest for victory and some patrons escaped by the ‘skin of their teeth’ as the wild animals charged into fences dismantling spectators who had perched to get a better view.
All of this was done by the animals in an attempted to throw off their riders, who through skills or divine intervention were able to avert injury throughout the day. Many riders were displaced by the raging animals to beat a hasty retreat. Some Vaqueros as well as their animals ended on their heads, shoulder and backs as some received some awkward tumbles, but it was all in the game. The large crowd was left breathless on many occasions as the Vaqueros performed their many stunts. Some even decided to use the backs of the animals to gyrate to the sounds.
Among the activities done was the Wild cow milking, where the participants (a pair) had to rope, restrain and milk the animal within a period of two minutes. The participant with the most milk won.
The Calf roping competition saw the Vaquero on horseback being required to rope a calf around the neck dismount the horse, secure three feet of the calf by tying it, stand and raise their hand in the air to indicate that they are done, the persons with the fastest time won.
The Bare Back and Saddle Bronco riding along with the Bull riding are similar in which the participant with one hand raised above the head has to ride the animal for a given time.
The various winners at the end of the day’s activity were – calf roping Orin Amastace winning from Odo Peters and ‘May May’ Anderson. The next event was Bare Back Bronco which was won by Farias from Odo Pters and another Brazilian Allan Kardeco.
Wild Cow Milking was done next and saw the combination of ‘May May’ Anderson and Keino
Hardcourt collecting the most milk in the time stipulated more than second place Clive Ross and partner with Clyde Winter and partner settling for third.
Bull Riding saw Max Celso Farias again in the ascendency winning from Carlos Davis and Clive Winter. The Saddle Bronco event was taken by Farias ahead of his Brazilian counterpart Valdhari Pamdillo with Vander Peters coming in third. Some of the events were not held due to the inclement weather which caused the activity to start somewhat late.
The event was attended by a wide cross section of spectators and incident free. The vaqueros, included females, were from Brazilians, Venezuelans and the interior regions of Rupununi and Lethem along with the locals from West and East Berbice.
The prizes which included cash incentives, trophies, and other memorabilia’s were presented to the outstanding performers immediately after the completion of the final events. Prizes ranged from $25,000 to $5,000 along with trophies, and other incentives. .
The day’s event was incident free and among those responsible for successfully bringing Rodeo to the coast were Inshanally and Fazal Habibulla.
The other members of the organizing team include Johnny and Jules Fredricks, Donald and Zaleena Lawrie, Grace Atkinson, Ovid Walcott, Lionel Moonsammy Lalta Deokie and Odo Peters. He was also loud in praise for the media in helping to publish the event.
