Today marks the commencement of the observance of National Road Safety Month, under the theme ‘Drive Wise and Save Lives’.
The Guyana National Road Safety Council (GNRSC) in collaboration with the Ministry of Home Affairs and the Guyana Police Force (GPF) will be embarking on a series of activities, training programmes and seminars in various Regions.
According to Romona Doorgen, Co-ordinator, GNRSC, these awareness programmes are timely and crucial at this point of time, given the escalated numbers of road accidents and road fatalities that are seemingly getting out of control.
She stated, “In our effort to curb the ongoing ‘road carnage’ GNRSC, Guyana Police Force (GPF) and Road Safety Volunteers around the country will be sensitizing and educating road users; mainly school children, school patrols, business entity drivers and public transportation drivers.”
Doorgen emphasised that included in the Month’s activities is a ‘School Road Safety Patrol Competition’ which will be launched today. All interested schools are encouraged to participate in this activity. Interested schools should contact GNRSC Co-ordinator on telephone numbers: 226-0384, 617-152.
She said that prizes will be awarded for: Best Road Safety Teacher, Best Group Coordination, Best Individual Performance and Best School Overall Performance in first, second and third categories.
Doorgen noted that the goal of hosting these activities is to generate an interest in all Guyanese both young and old to become Road Safety Advocates.
