Police pensioners are still to be paid their pension after someone stole $3.4M one year ago from the Force’s Finance Office. To date the senior citizens are yet to receive their money.
According to one of the many pensioners who gave their best years to the police force, Hasan De’ Groot, the police force has money for him since 2009, and on the occasions he visited the Ministry of Finance he was given various excuses.
He explained that officials from the Ministry of Finance told him that the money was already handed over to the Ministry of Home Affairs. However, when he visited Home Affairs he was told that the money was transferred to the Police Force and the commissioner would have to look into the issue.
“This thing look like bare fraud because is lots of people like me they owe,” he said.
Earlier this year Commissioner of Police Henry Greene had said that the monies were available for payment. However when pensioners turned up at the Police Finance Office they were told that this was not the case.
Pensioners, are fed up with running back and forth to Police Finance Office to uplift their monies, and are calling on the Ministry of Home Affairs to investigate what has made the funds inaccessible.
The money represented retroactive increases in pension for retired ranks.
An early January 2010 release stated the money had been in a canister, secured in a locked cashier cage.
The release had said that “investigations are being conducted into the larceny of $3.4 million from the Police Finance Office, Police Headquarters, Eve Leary…there were no signs of any breakage to the Office”.
To date, only departmental charges have been instituted against some ranks.
