…30 firearm robberies in ten months
-but high percentage of cases solved
More murders have occurred in E and F Division in the past ten months than were recorded in that Division for the entire 2009 and 2010.
A top police official disclosed that E&F Division has recorded 36 murders so far for the year. Close to 75 percent of these murders occurred in mining communities. Of the 36 homicides, 26 were disorderly murders.
While the Division may have the highest number of murders, it may also have the highest percentage of solved cases.
For instance, 20 of the 36 murders that occurred this year have been solved.
In contrast, in 2009, E&F Division recorded 22 murders for the entire year; with 16 being solved, and 35 for the entire 2010, with 20 cases solved. “Many people talk about crime but don’t talk about the cases that have been solved,” the official said.
According to the official, the murder rate in E&F Division began to pick up in the last two years and was linked to the rising price of gold. That probably caused criminal elements to gravitate to the interior to target those in the mining industry.
An example of this is the fact that in the division, gun-related robberies for this year have also exceeded those that occurred in 2009 and 2010. Within the past ten months, E&F ranks have investigated 30 gunpoint robberies, and had 12 suspects placed before the courts.
In 2009, there were 28 gun-related robberies for the entire year, with only eight cases being solved. In 2010, there were 30 reported gunpoint robberies with 10 persons being charged.
And more firearms have been seized in E and F Division for this year than for the entire 2009 and 2010.
Kaieteur News was told that ranks have seized 36 firearms so far this year and have charged 23 persons. In 2009, the police seized 18 illegal firearms and charged 13 persons. Twenty-three firearms were seized in 2010 and 31 persons were charged.
The official also said that ranks in the division have been focusing on cases of domestic violence, which he said was a national issue.
For the year, the ranks have investigated 174 domestic violence cases and placed 97 persons before the courts.
In 2009 E&F ranks investigated 123 domestic violence reports and placed 66 alleged offenders before the courts.
Last year, the division investigated 123 reports, and charged 52 persons.
