‘Rice Truck’ gets 18 years for manslaughter

Chetram Nourang, 37, called “Rice Truck”, the cane cutter of Adelphi Village, East Canje, Berbice, who was on trial in the Berbice High Court before Justice Roxanne George-Wilshire was on Monday sentenced to 18 years in jail after he pleaded guilty to the lesser count of Manslaughter.
He had appeared before a mixed jury charged with the murder of his reputed wife, Jasodra Budhoo, 45, called Susheila at Adelphi village East Canje Berbice on May 26, 2007.
His guilty plea came after prosecutor Attorney at Law, Rhondel Weaver, presented the indictment. However, before the start of the day’s proceedings Nourang’s defence attorney Charrandass Persaud informed the court that his client wanted to take a certain course of action and change his plea to guilty of manslaughter.
Nourang was accused of slitting the woman’s throat after she allegedly spurned him.
He and Jasodra Budhoo had shared a common law relationship in her house for about two years. She eventually put him out after he became very abusive.
It is alleged that on the night of May 26, 2007 he returned to the premises and after entering the house demanded sex and offered to give her $ 1,000. The woman refused and a scuffle ensued. He then slashed her throat with a knife.
She managed to make it to a neighbour’s house from where she was taken to the New Amsterdam Hospital where she remained a patient before succumbing a few days later.
In handing down her verdict Justice George-Wilshire stated that Domestic Violence and death in intimate relationship must be stopped.
She stated that a strong message must be sent to everybody that the court will not tolerate such acts and will deal sternly with such issues. She stated that persons must not resort to violence, much less to such extent. The judge stated that the evidence was strong enough that the man had slit the woman’s throat.
Earlier in his plea of mitigation Attorney at Law Charrandass Persaud stated that his client has been in jail since 2007. He also stated that whilst his client was on remand he was charged and sentenced to five years in jail for possession of Narcotics. He stated that while his client was on remand he was already serving time.
The judge stated that she took what the attorney stated into consideration and that the accused did not waste the court’s time.
Nourang while awaiting the completion of his preliminary inquiry was found with Narcotics in prison and was subsequently convicted and sentenced to five years imprisonment.
He was committed by Magistrate Geeta Chandan-Edmond at the Reliance Magistrate’s court.
