The Mangrove Reserve Women Producers (MRWP) held their first Farmers’ Market, sponsored by Digicel to promote their agro-produce which they have been developing for months.
Despite the inclement weather yesterday, many braved the rain to participate in this momentous event for the women, which was held at the Mangroves Visitors Centre, Victoria, East Coast Demerara.
Consumers were exposed to a wide array of mouth-watering foods, drinks and condiments. Visitors were able to treat themselves to breakfast items such as saltfish and bakes from the booths under the towering mango trees.
All this was against the background of entertaining steel band music provided by members of the Buxton Pride Steel Orchestra, the youth arm of the Buxton Mangrove Committee.
At intervals, the Chairperson of the GMRP, Annette Arjoon-Martins briefed visitors with presentations on the GMRP and its aims and objectives within the context of climate change and the role of mangroves in sea defence.
Arjoon-Martins said that the Farmers’ Market was held on the final day of Agriculture Month 2011 and she was extremely grateful for Digicel’s support, without which, the event would not have been possible.
Arjoon-Martins disclosed that even though the rains had affected the attendance she was convinced that those who attended would have enjoyed their visit, and their reaction to the products was extremely positive.
Apart from purchases, there were some orders for reasonably priced gift baskets for the Christmas season for those who wanted to give a gift that makes a difference.
The enthusiastic response of the participants has encouraged the women producers to consider holding the event again so that those who would have stayed home due to the inclement weather would get an opportunity to experience the Farmers’ Market another time.
The event and the new organization is part of the alternative livelihoods component of the Guyana Mangrove Restoration Project (GMRP) funded by the Government of Guyana and the European Union.
