After a century of living, the reserved Gladstone Augustus Mack considers his life to be simple and quiet. Such a life is similar to the man himself. Today he reached the envied milestone. On the occasion he stated that there is little he regrets in the span of his life.
Mack hails from Aurora, Essequibo Coast where he was born on October 30, 1911. He lived there until 1925. He was orphaned at the age of 14, because of his father’s passing; his mother had died when he was just two years old. After his father passed away Gladstone left Essequibo to live in Georgetown with an aunt.
In his words, he was an ordinary labourer. While he lived in Georgetown he had very little to say about his experiences. He recalled, with a smile, that he visited the seawall every Sunday with his girlfriend since he was not a man to ‘sport’ much.
At the age of 28 he left town to return to his home in Aurora where he courted his wife whom he married in 1944. He and his wife were married for 66 years until her death in 2010. He fathered nine children, 26 grandchildren, 59 great grandchildren and five great great grandchildren.
He was a proud provision farmer in Essequibo and stated that life was simple. Mack currently lives in Sophia with family members after leaving Essequibo last December.
Mack mentioned that there are more lights now then when he was younger, and that Guyana has improved and grown immensely from the time of his youth. He stated that he really enjoys fried chicken and finds himself eating it whenever he has the chance.
Mack recognizes the ‘faithfulness’ of his children as the reason he is still alive today. He added that “they take good care of me.”
On behalf of Kaieteur News we wish Gladstone Augustus Mack a Happy Birthday!
