Maydha Persaud M.S.—a most dedicated teacher
If one should describe Maydha Persaud, a/k Sir Maydha, not too many words would best fit a perfect description than simplicity.
Indeed simplicity, and humility have been the key words that aided in fashioning his character into, undoubtedly, a committed and stellar educationist, a teacher who taught at the Secondary level for some 37 years.

Sir Madhya, as he is commonly referred to by Essequibians, was recently bestowed with the Medal of Service for his contributions to education recently .The dedicated, magnanimous and altruistic individual, who was born into poverty in the tranquil village of Golden Fleece Estate, on the Essequibo Coast, vividly recalled spending 11 of his 62-years living in a logie.
Maydha said that it was life in a logie that helped shaped him into one of the simplest and contented individuals.
Maydha joined the teaching fraternity in 1970 as an acting teacher. He moved up the ladder to a Grade 1 teacher, before becoming Deputy Head and later Headmaster of the Abram Zuil Secondary School, a school at which he taught for 37-years, 14 of which he served as Headmaster. He retired as head teacher.
The husband and father of two attributed his success as an educator to the love for his job, punctuality and regularity, sharing his vision with stake holders, the human relationships and networking with the wider community.
As headmaster, Sir Maydha said that he taught Biology, Human Biology, Mathematics, English Language, English Literature at CSEC and GCE. He said that one of the strategies he applied as a teacher to achieve excellent results was compulsory introduction of English Literature in every form in the school.
The educator is of the firm opinion that by introducing English B, he helped bring about a disciplined learning environment.
“Students were compelled to read and thus their language improved; they learnt to think critically and it touched their affirmative domain.”
In 2002, the humble, but dedicated teacher received an award for the best teacher of the year and was rewarded with one million dollars from Laparkan Group of Company.
In 2004, Sir Maydha also was fortunate to attend a course on Curriculum and Resource Development Materials at Chennai in India.
Mr.Persaud can be described as a patriotic Guyanese. He served as Secretary of the Suddie Station Management Committee, Secretary of the Cullen-Abram Zuil Policing Group and a member of the Caribbean Examination Council.
As a retired teacher, Sir Maydha is currently employed as a Commissioner at the teaching Service Commission. He still offers tutorial courses for the CSEC examination.
According to two former Ministers of Education, Dr.Dale Bisnauth and Dr Henry Jeffrey, Madhya Persaud had the best school in Guyana. Sir Maydha’s personal motto is “I am still learning.”
