Mangrove Committee hosts Farmers’ market today

Members of the Mangrove Reserve Women’s Agriculture Producers (MRWAP) group based at Cove and John East Coast Demerara, will host the first ever Farmers’ Market under the trees, today.
The venue is the grounds of the Mangrove Visitor Centre, Cove and John, East Coast Demerara.
The event is part of the alternative livelihood component of the Guyana Mangrove Restoration Project (GMRP) funded by the government and the European Union and is being sponsored by DIGICEL.
Chairperson of the GMRP, Annette Arjoon-Martins, said that the sale under the trees is the GMRPs final activity  for Agriculture Month 2011.
The women will be displaying a variety of local produce for sale including  mangrove honey, known for its golden colour and distinctive taste,  handmade beeswax candles, mango, tamarind and bilimbi achar, tamarind balls,  lime , pepper sauce, green seasoning, cassava bread and coconut quinches.
Visitors can also enjoy breakfast items such as saltfish and bakes and saltfish quinches at tables and chairs arranged under the towering mango trees on the property.
They can also choose from a variety of fresh fruit juices such as soursop, pineapple, sugarcane and water coconuts.
The event will run from 10am to 3pm with live music from the Buxton
Pride Steelband.
Patrons can also browse the area under the estate house where the mangrove information displays have been erected and there will be presentations on the mangrove project every half hour.
Educational games for the kids are also part of the programme, Arjoon-Martins said.
A 20-minute drive from Georgetown, the Mangrove Visitor Centre is on the left-hand side going east and a banner for the event will be visible on the towering tree in front of the gate at the entrance of the property.
Admission is free, and there is ample parking within the three-acre compound.
