There is a high possibility that the November edition of the ProAm boxing series dubbed, ‘Friday Night Fights’, will see the amateur segment taking on an international flavour.
This disclosure was made by President of the Guyana Amateur Boxing Association, Steve Ninvalle to Kaieteur Sport. Ninvalle informed that he and President of the Guyana Boxing Board of Control, Peter Abdool, have been in discussions of recent and have been looking at improving the monthly cards.
Ninvalle noted that efforts are being made to have several Jamaican fighters appear on the November edition, while Mexican amateur boxers are also being looked at for future programmes. The two presidents and their respective committees are to meet during the course of the new week to determine the feasibility of the venture and the logistics involved including airfare and accommodation and securing the necessary funding for same.
Ninvalle, who is the Parliamentary Secretary in the Ministry of Sports, noted that this initiative will be a big boost for the young fighters as they focus on the road ahead. He said they have been fighting among themselves and that can take them only so far, but the international competition will boost their performances and experience levels in a major way.
Several amateur boxers are preparing for the London Olympics and that kind of exposure will serve them well. However, in the meantime the boxers encamped are preparing for the Ronald Wilson Memorial Tournament scheduled for Barbados this month end under the watchful eyes of Trainers Terrence Poole, Sebert Blake and Wincel Thomas and the overseas exposure will be beneficial for their London and other preparation.
