Irate residents in a section of Albouystown are expressing great disgust and frustration as it relates to a garbage pile-up in a nearby canal. The waterway in the vicinity of Albouys Street has been overflowing for days now as a result of current spring tides.
Zalina Singh, an elderly woman, told Kaieteur News that she has been living in the area for many years and has always known it to be in a deplorable state since the gutters leading to the trench (and the canal itself) are usually choked causing a ghastly pile of stagnant garbage in front of her yard and adjacent premises.
Other residents complained that not only are they unable to stand the stench caused by the disgraceful build-up but the mosquitoes, cockroaches and rats are also causing discomfort – and in the case of rodents damage to their homes and business, particularly a grocery shop located just by the clogged trench.
Muddy water, plastic bottles, juice tins, food boxes among other things, were seen floating in the yards and even the homes of some residents last Thursday night when the tides were at their highest. Parents are pleading to the authorities to take priority in cleaning the trench as it is extremely hazardous to their children.
RandolphThorne, a community chairman, told this newspaper that he spoke to the City Engineer who promised that the situation would be dealt with as the Mayor and City Council have already undertaken the initiative to cleanup the drains and trenches in the area.
However, workers have stopped working for the time being as they have not seen the garbage disposal truck in days. Seen in the vicinity of Albouys Street, where the garbage is, are workers relaxing on a parked and seemingly useless excavator.
