Farmers across Region Two staged a peaceful protest outside the Guyana Rice Development Board, at Anna Regina to complain about the serious problems they continue to encounter at rice mills on the Essequibo Coast.
They say that they are all ill equipped. They say that because of the poor equipment they do not get the right weight for their paddy.
According to the farmers, over the years they were confronted with similar issues. Almost all of the rice mills are without equipment such as dockage testers, clippers and digital Scales.
The rice farmers carried placards bearing statements such as’ We need fair deal’; ‘We need Minister to intervene’ ‘We need proper representation’.
Most of the rice farmers who took to the street were prominent rice farmers.
The farmers said that they have also encountered the problem of being issued with incorrect weight, bounce cheques, post-dated cheques. Others have complained of being owed millions by the Mahaicony Rice Mills.
Farmers claim the problems have existed since 2010.
