Disgruntled public servant destroys Ministry of Foreign Affairs property

Timothy Rutherford appeared at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court holding a file of papers that he sought to provide to the court as evidence of him being wronged by the Government of Guyana. Rutherford appeared before Magistrate Sueanna Lovell to answer the charge of damage to property.
It was alleged that the man entered the Government establishment and destroyed a monitor, property of the Foreign Affairs Ministry. The court heard that on October 21, Rutherford went to the Ministry and requested to speak with the Director General.
He was subsequently told by the secretary at the office that the person he wished to see was not in. The prosecution stated that Rutherford became annoyed, picked up a monitor valued at $25,000 and slammed it against the wall of the building.
The police were contacted and the man was taken into custody.
When Rutherford appeared in court he alleged years of service that he provided to Guyana. The man told the court that he had studied in various locations attaining various certificates, returned to Guyana and offered his service to the country. He said that he was not paid.
The defendant continued that he was sent to study overseas by the Guyana government. He claimed that he is owed money by the government for his travelling. He explained that he used personal funds to do so during study time, monies that the government would have been responsible for.
Rutherford claimed that he also had not been paid for his services. The man told the court that he had taken his plight to several institutions and he was later told that he would be compensated for his service by various government officials to whom he had reported his plight.
It has taken the government ten years and they are yet to compensate him for his service. He further told the court that he knows he behaved inappropriately on the said day but he had been frustrated by the reluctance of the Government to compensate him.
He also apologized for his actions and assured the court that it would not happen again. Rutherford was subsequently fined $25,000 or go to jail for a month. The man was also given up to November 28 to pay the fine.
The court took into consideration that he is unemployed and could not pay the sum within less than a month. He reiterated that he was before the court because of the unfairness of the government which irritated him.
