-Stakeholders launch 2011 Cycling, Swimming, Track and Field contest
Guyana’s bigger, better network, Digicel, has committed to a three-year Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) that covers a major sponsorship arrangement for the National Schools’ Cycling, Swimming and Track and Field Championships.
The commitment was revealed yesterday when stakeholders gathered in the Ministry of Education Boardroom to officially launch the 2011 Championships that will be held during November 14-18 at the Guyana National Stadium, Providence.
The Ministry of Education and the Guyana Teachers’ Union (GTU) are the primary stakeholders of the National Schools’ Championships.
“Digicel is happy to be on board. Digicel believes in the potential of these Championships and as such we would be entering into a three-year MoU,” Digicel’s Public Relations Manager, Shonnet Moore told the media, adding that will be signing the document.
Moore said that the Championships play an important role in preparing children for the future and is in keeping with the company’s vision for the development of youth and sports. She noted that the company is pleased to be a long-term partner of the event.
While officials chose not to disclose the sum of the sponsorship arrangement, it was described as “sizeable”. Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Education, Pulandar Kandhi lauded the effort of Digicel in seizing what he called an important corporate opportunity.
“Last year we had a very successful relationship with Digicel. We look forward to working with them now and in the future to ensure that we have a great Championship. We hope that this year we can exceed the success we had last year,” Kandhi indicated.
He assured Moore and Digicel’s Sponsorship Manager, Gavin Hope, who were representing the telecommunication giants at the forum that the Management Committee for the Championships is working hard to ensure that all the necessary areas are covered.
President of GTU, Colin Bynoe reiterated the fact that Digicel has taken an “exceptional” lead in its corporate support for the Championships. “One corporate citizen has agreed to take charge of these Championships, not only for this year, but three years,” he said.
Bynoe informed that the Championships have grown and without the support of the corporate community, the vision of the event cannot be realised. In this regard, he called Digicel’s move a significant step toward a successful National Schools’ Championships.
“The Championships is getting bigger and we are happy that in years to come, we will be able to bring it to what we want with this kind of support. I know we are capable of doing that,” Bynoe noted, adding that the 2011 Championships will be a memorable occasion.
