In a show of appreciation for the services offered by the late Lester ‘Puppy’ Peters Head Coach of the Fruta Conquerors Football Club Sampson Gilbert has organised an Under-15 League for all clubs affiliated to the Georgetown Football Association.
The League is anticipated to commence on Sunday with four matches planned for the Tucville ground.
Peters, a former member and one of the leading players of the Fruta Conquerors died recently following a brief illness and in commemoration of the dedication and commitment he displayed during his tenure at the club, Gilbert in a telephone conversation with Kaieteur Sport said that the idea to run a League was merely an expression of the club’s appreciation for the services rendered to the organisation by Peters.
The late midfielder joined the club in 1986 and played an instrumental role in leading them to numerous competition titles during the time spent and also played a pivotal role in nurturing the talent of many of the current batch of players.
According to Gilbert, nearly all the clubs have responded positively to the invite among them being Flamingo, Renaissance, Black Pearl, Santos, GFC and Grass Roots, while Pele, Sunburst Camptown and Riddim Squad are yet to respond to the invitation.
He added that should they attempt to enter the competition at anytime after the start, they would be accommodated and the fixtures adjusted. It was further disclosed that teams wishing to enter two sides are free to do so.
The matches slated for the weekend will see Fruta Conquerors tackling Renaissance from 09:00 hrs; Santos engages Flamingo at 11:00 hrs; Grass Roots collide with GFC from 13:00 hrs and Black Pearl square off against Fruta Conquerors A at 15:00 hrs. Matches will be played every Sunday, at the same venue.
