Victory Valley Royals’ quartet of Chris Williams, Orlan Glasgow, Harold Adams and Marlon Pollydore have clearly shown that their intentions is to win the $1m first place prize up for grabs in the of the Mackeson Smooth Moves 3-on-3 Basketball tournament.
The young team topped the Linden Zone of the country-wide competition with Jets, Unknowns and Assassins joining them to represent Linden in the Round-of-16 knockout playoffs, which is set for November 5 at the Mackenzie Sports Club Basketball Court.
Assassin was the only team to defeat the Royals, winning 8-7, but the team from the western half of the Demerara River, who had opened their night with 14-6 win over Ghetto, went on to defeat Team Titan 17-10, Unknowns 10-9 and Jets on a sudden-death shoot out.
Prior to their loss to Royals, Jets stopped Assassins 15-9 in the first game of the night, won 8-3 against Team Titan; 14-7 against Unknowns and 15-11 versus Ghetto.
Ghetto later forfeited their final game of the night, which was supposed to have been against the Assassins. The occasion set up what was one of the most exciting games of the evening between Jets and Royals for the $40,000 Zone Winners’ Prize.
The spectators were very much into the game as supporters of both teams were vocal throughout the contest, but when the dust settled, and the final whistle was blown, the scores for both teams were on 11 points, forcing a sudden-death shootout.
Lawrence De Costa missed his attempt, which meant that the Jets had to settle for $10,000 while Royals celebrated pocketing $40,000 for winning the Zone.
