The body of Devindra Mohabir, one of the two boys who perished in the Demerara River on Wednesday,
was found near Ruimveldt yesterday morning.
The other body, that of Renaldo Henry, was still unaccounted for up to press time last night.
Mohabir’s grandfather told this newspaper yesterday that at approximately 10:00 hours, a man told him that the body was found near a wharf at Ruimveldt.
The teenager’s body was the second to be pulled from the Demerara River yesterday morning, following the discovery of the remains of a man of African ancestry.
That body was discovered at Houston and was towed by a police boat to the Ruimveldt wharf where it was collected by workers of the Lyken Funeral Home.
In fact, when news of the find circulated many had felt that it was the body of one of the missing teens from Wednesday’s ill-fated expedition.
So far that body is still unidentified.
Mohabir was among three boys, including Henry, who had headed off to the Demerara River to swim on Wednesday. But only Mohabir and Henry went into the water, while the other youth remained on the river bank, and it was he who survived to tell investigators what happened.
He is reported to have told Police that the two teenagers were swimming when Henry started to be pulled away by the water. He recounted that as Henry struggled, he held onto Mohabir and both of them disappeared.
The third boy had informed Mohabir’s parents of his disappearance and helped convey information to the police.
Reports are that Henry left his Alberttown, Georgetown home on Monday, purportedly to go to school sports, but visited Grove, where his father lived.
Residents of Grove said that he had in his possession as much as $100,000 which he was splurging on his friends. Henry was said to have been living in Grove before his parents separated.
Henry and his friends visited a game shop in Grove on Monday, and on Tuesday he was found to be still in the village. One resident said she found him sleeping in an abandoned house.
On Tuesday, the mother reportedly visited the village and sought the assistance of the Police in locating her son.
A resident said she encouraged Henry to return home and she saw him join a bus.
However, on Wednesday morning, she found him lying near her stand. Henry, she said, was in the company of other boys who had joined him to go to the game shop. But since it was a holiday, the shop was closed. The resident said that she chided the boys for ganging up so early in the morning.
She said a few of them broke off from the group, including one of Mohabir’s younger brothers.
However, three of them headed off to the Demerara River to swim.
