Twenty-six-year-old Hubert Hunte, popularly called ‘Chinee Man’ of Providence, East Bank Demerara, was up to late last evening still in a critical condition following a collision on the East Bank Demerara Highway.
The accident occurred at the junction of the Demerara Harbour Bridge.
Hunte, according to eyewitnesses, was travelling south along the eastern carriageway some time around 19:00hrs when a minibus which was travelling in front of him turned left and he slammed into the vehicle.
Hunte was at the time travelling with a pillion rider who is another popular Bagotstown fixture Rawle Smith who was himself injured in the accident.
According to an eyewitness, Leon, he heard a screeching sound followed by a collision and when he ventured to check he noticed two persons lying on the roadway, one of them seemed unconscious.
The eyewitness said that blood was spewing from Hunte’s head and that he used one of the injured men’s shirts to attempt to stop the bleeding.
The duo was quickly whisked away to the Diamond Diagnostic Centre where doctors fought to stabilise Hunte.
Several family members rushed to the hospital where he was being treated as the tears flowed awaiting word on his condition.
The driver of the minibus was taken to the Providence Police Station where police are continuing their investigations.
Hunte was later transferred to the Georgetown Public Hospital where he remained in a critical condition.
