After hours of waiting for the MV Kimbia at the Kingston Wharf, passengers fumed on
Monday after they were told by management that the ship was overloaded and crates of supplies would have to be off-loaded.
According to some passengers, the MV Kimbia had to travel to the North West District in Region One and the ship was supposed to leave at 13:00hrs on Monday. However, this was not the case since too many crates were loaded.
“The person who does normally load the ship was not working (Monday) and it look like the persons left to do the job had no idea what they had done,” one irate passenger said. “Is about a 100 passengers have to waste time now, because of a stupid mistake.”
Other passengers related that they would now have to suffer since the ship has left for Mabaruma, and persons would have to stand the expense for the carelessness of transport officials.
“The Minister of Transport sent somebody to force people off the ship.” One man said.
However, at 18:00hrs yesterday while all passengers were eventually loaded on, several crates were left behind.
When the Ministry of Public Works was contacted, the General Manager of Transport and the Minister of the division were said to be in a meeting.
